'97 was a very good vintage in Alsace, and it shows on this relatively
youthful SGN from Hugel. It is still pretty light in colour, a mellow
golden hue with hints of orange, and it showcases many truly delightful
aromas and flavours - lychee, honeysuckle, rose water, honey, cinnamon -
and it has a tongue-enveloping texture that fills your mouth with
liquid joy. It is rich and sweet, but not overly so, decadent yet
elegant, opulent yet refined and nuanced, and a drink that I will
revisit in 10 years or so. A splendid mouthful of sheer pleasure. Well
done Jean...
A decent example of a standard Riesling, not especially complex, but quite refreshing. Pleasant aromas of white flowers, pear, peach and lime, with maybe the merest hint of petrol, all of which is reflected on the palate with an additional wet rock/flinty minerality. Medium/full bodied, with higher levels of acidity, a touch of residual sugar and a kind of buttery texture, starting to show some pleasing secondary characteristics of ageing. Went very well indeed with the sushi at the BYOB we went to tonight. Definitely enough to remind me that I don't drink enough Riesling. (04/10)
